Older adults who live with type 2 diabetes need to keep in mind that a healthy routine and healthy eating choices are crucial for managing their condition during the holidays. In honor of American Diabetes Month, personal care services propose the following tips that can help your loved one maintain their blood sugar levels and prevent adding up additional weight this holiday season.

Don’t Neglect Your Daily Exercise Routine

During the festive season, it is not uncommon that older adults skip their exercise routines in favor of overindulging and spending more time with their nearest and dearest. Personal care services, however, point out that this is not a good idea. Staying physically active is important for blood sugar stabilization in diabetics. As many people tend to overeat during the holidays, exercise can help your loved one burn additional calories and avoid gaining weight. Get a Good Night’s Rest Every Night

Very often, older adults stay up late on holidays, enjoying the company of their loved ones. Though this is understandable, there is a downside to not getting enough sleep if you’re diabetic. Lack of sleep can make it more difficult for your parent to control their blood sugar levels, so it is important that they get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night.

Opt for Diabetes-Friendly Recipes

When seniors with diabetes are invited for dinner at a loved one’s home or are hosting the holiday dinner for the whole family, they should look for diabetes friendly alternatives to replace traditional holiday recipes. Personal care services recommend preparing mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes, for example. Also, consider opting for sweeteners when making cake or cookies instead of real sugar.

Avoid Skipping Meals

Seniors with diabetes who skip meals and then overeat can find it more challenging to keep their blood sugar levels under control. In order to keep their blood sugar normal, remind your loved one to eat smaller meals throughout the day and refrain from overeating during the holiday feast. 

Moderately Drink Alcoholic Drinks

When there’s a celebration, alcohol is almost always involved. Although there is nothing wrong with having a few drinks, your senior mom or dad needs to be careful not to overdrink, as too much alcohol in the blood can lower sugar levels and cause diabetes medication side effects.
